Frequently Asked Questions

Cannabis Cultivation Consulting, Facility Design, and Commercial Grow Operations

What services does Open Source Horticulture provide as a cannabis cultivation consultant?

Open Source Horticulture provides full-scope cannabis cultivation consulting for operators at every stage, from established license holders to teams preparing to enter or scale the market.

Our work spans:

  • Commercial cannabis facility design and CEA system planning

  • Cannabis cultivation project management, from early design through commissioning

  • Operational workflow consulting for cannabis grow facilities

  • Environmental controls, HVACD, fertigation, lighting, and irrigation guidance

  • Cultivation troubleshooting, performance audits, and optimization strategies

  • Cannabis production planning and harvest scheduling support

  • Post-harvest process consulting, including drying, curing, and downstream handling

We act as a hands-on cannabis cultivation advisor to help growers design and operate stable, predictable environments that support consistent quality and efficient operations.

Do you have preferred vendors or equipment partners?

Open Source Horticulture is vendor-neutral, which means we do not sell equipment and we are not tied to any single manufacturer or brand.

Our role as a cannabis cultivation consultant is to help you evaluate HVACD, lighting, irrigation, fertigation, controls, and greenhouse systems based on what fits your facility, climate, and production goals.

We regularly collaborate with a wide range of commercial cannabis equipment vendors and technology partners, and we understand how different systems perform in real cultivation environments. That experience allows us to:

  • Compare quotes and system designs from multiple equipment suppliers

  • Identify gaps or risks in proposed environmental and irrigation solutions

  • Match equipment capabilities to your cultivation model and expansion plans

  • Support RFPs, design reviews, and commissioning for cannabis grow facilities

Our priority is helping you choose reliable, serviceable equipment that strengthens daily operations and supports the long view of your facility’s performance.

When should I involve OSH in my cannabis facility project?

The earlier you bring in a cannabis cultivation consultant, the more opportunities there are to prevent problems before they are built into the facility. Engaging OSH during concept or pre-construction allows us to:

  • Align cultivation room layout with your canopy strategy and workflow

  • Validate mechanical, electrical, and plumbing requirements for cultivation

  • Review HVACD, lighting, and fertigation selections for performance and reliability

  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and integrators so systems work together

If your project is already underway, we can still support mid-construction changes, retrofits, facility turnarounds, and system recalibration to help you hit your production and quality targets.

What types of cannabis cultivation projects does OSH work on?

OSH works across a wide range of commercial cannabis cultivation environments and project types, including:

  • Indoor cannabis grow facilities

  • Hybrid and traditional cannabis greenhouses

  • New-build projects and first-time licensed facilities

  • Expansion projects, remodels, and retrofits

  • Cultivation workflow restructuring and resource-efficiency initiatives

  • Multi-facility operational support for operators scaling into new markets

We help first-time builders bring their facility online and assist long-standing operators who want cultivation expertise that leads to smoother operations and fewer surprises.

How does OSH’s approach to cannabis cultivation consulting differ from others?

Our approach combines practical cultivation experience with deep facility and systems knowledge. That means we can speak to what happens in the grow room and what is happening inside the mechanical and control systems that support it.

What sets our cannabis consulting approach apart:

  • Direct experience with cultivation systems engineering, not just plant science

  • Vendor-neutral recommendations based on your climate, market, and goals

  • Focus on facility reliability and uptime.

  • A collaborative model that supports your cultivation lead, operations team, and ownership group

This balance helps operators prevent setbacks that interfere with healthy crops or daily workflow, and it strengthens the operation’s ability to scale.

What does a cannabis cultivation consulting engagement look like?

Every engagement is customized around your operation’s size, stage, and objectives. Typical structures include:

  • One-time assessments to evaluate grow rooms, workflows, or system performance

  • Full cannabis facility design consulting, including cultivation room specifications and environmental requirements

  • Ongoing cultivation advisory services, with weekly or monthly support for your team

  • Cannabis operations optimization projects, focused on throughput, labor flow, consistency, and quality

  • Commissioning and startup support for new commercial grow facilities

Our role is to deliver cultivation guidance and operational support that reflect your budget today and the scale you’re aiming for tomorrow.

How can hiring a cannabis cultivation consultant save time and money?

A knowledgeable cannabis cultivation consultant helps avoid problems that commonly drive up cost or slow down production. By bringing OSH into your project, you can:

  • Avoid design and engineering missteps during facility planning

  • Shorten the time between construction completion and your first harvest

  • Reduce labor inefficiencies and unnecessary bottlenecks in the grow workflow

  • Stabilize environmental conditions to protect yield and potency

  • Lower energy, water, and nutrient waste

  • Identify equipment issues or capacity gaps before they become expensive outages

Many operators contact us after costly mistakes. Our goal is to help you make confident decisions from the start and keep your cannabis cultivation facility performing reliably.

What should I expect in terms of pricing for cannabis consulting services?

Pricing for cannabis cultivation consulting and facility support is based on:

  • The size and complexity of your cultivation operation

  • Whether we are supporting design, operations, or both

  • The expected duration of services

  • On-site versus remote consulting needs

  • The depth of involvement in project management or commissioning

We provide clear, custom proposals so operators can align cannabis consulting services with both their budget and their production goals.

Can OSH improve an existing cannabis cultivation facility that is struggling with consistency or performance?

Yes. Many operators hire us to evaluate and improve existing cannabis cultivation facilities. We help diagnose and resolve issues related to:

  • Inconsistent temperature or humidity control

  • Poor airflow distribution or system balancing

  • Irrigation, fertigation, or substrate performance problems

  • Inefficient labor flow in cultivation rooms and support areas

  • Low yields, slow growth, or unstable quality

  • Harvest timing, production planning, or room turnover challenges

Through cultivation facility audits and operational optimization projects, we help growers stabilize performance and build systems that hold up to the demands of real-world production.
